Is Your Site Mobile Friendly – That is The Question (for now)

Raphael Sebbag

On April 21 (2015) Google will begin implementing a significant algorithm update (read more about it by clicking here) to test whether a website is compatible with mobile devices, that is, does the site design adapt to the size of the screen. If it doesn’t, then it is not mobile friendly.

Google started playing around with this in its formula (algorithm) last year, but is now turning the notch up, globally, and will be putting sites into two categories, it’s either mobile friendly or it’s not – no in between.

It is not doom and gloom entirely, your site will not disappear if it is not mobile friendly. BUT, if you have relied on natural search engine traffic until now AND your site is not mobile friendly BUT your competitors have a mobile friendly site, then you may see your rankings go down very soon as a result, vis a vis your competitors. Remember, Search engine ranking algorithms take into account over 200 factors, mobile friendliness being one of them.

Unfortunately I am not a prophet (not that I think anyone thought I was) and cannot tell you how it will affect your site specifically, but just wanted to bring it to your attention.

If you are not sure whether your site is mobile friendly try going to your website using your smart phone, or shrink the browser window size on your desktop or laptop and if it doesn’t adapt to the size of the screen in an evidently readable format, then it is most likely not mobile friendly.
