A team of champions is not a champion team: what Argentina’s semi-final win says about your marketing

Everyone remembers Messi’s cross to Martínez this week. How many remember how the ball got to Messi?

Argentina beat England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final at Atlanta Stadium. Anthony Gordon put England in front in the 55th minute. Enzo Fernández levelled in the 85th with a curling strike from 25 yards. Then, two minutes into stoppage time, Messi floated in a cross and Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner.

Cue the highlights reel. Cue the tributes to Messi. Cue Martínez in tears at the final whistle.

But zoom out.

That header came off a Messi cross. The cross came off a rebound after Alexis Mac Allister hit the post. And Mac Allister only got that chance because Argentina had spent ten minutes pressing England into their own half.

Martínez got the credit. Ten other players earned it.

Watching it back the next morning, my first thought wasn’t about the football. It was about a conversation I’d had that week with a prospect who told me, “Spend more on Google Ads and get more leads.”

The Messi complex

We see the same pattern every week in our line of work.

A business owner comes to us convinced Google Ads is the answer to their growth problem. More budget, better keywords, higher bids. They want a specialist to come in and be Messi.

Sometimes they’ve already spent big and it hasn’t worked. Sometimes they’ve been through an agency that promised the world and delivered a few clicks. Either way, they’ve decided the fix is a better version of the same thing.

But Google Ads doesn’t work in isolation. It’s the pass or the header at the end of the move.

Every conversion sits on top of a range of contributing factors:

  • A website that actually converts visitors into enquiries
  • Traffic that’s genuinely qualified, not just cheap
  • Pricing that competes with what else is on the market
  • Product or service pages that give people a reason to buy
  • Social proof that backs up what your ad is promising
  • A sales process that follows up on leads within hours, not days

If any of those are broken, more ad spend just buys you more expensive traffic to a website that leaks.

Every player has a role

Argentina didn’t win because Messi is the best player on the pitch. They won because the whole squad played their role in the right moment.

Mac Allister’s shot forced the rebound that put Messi in space. Messi collected the ball because he’d been reading play his entire career. Argentina had pinned England back for ten minutes before that moment even existed. Martínez, on the bench moments earlier, made the run.

Take any of those away and the goal doesn’t happen.

This is what team effort actually means in digital marketing. Each part of your marketing sets up the next.

Your SEO brings in people at the top of the funnel who want to research their options. Your Google Ads catch the ones who are ready to buy right now. Your website converts both. Your remarketing follows up with the ones who didn’t convert first time. Your email list nurtures the ones who bought once and might buy again.

Miss one and the whole system limps.

What breaks when the team is unbalanced

We’ve inherited plenty of accounts where the business was pouring money into ads and getting almost nothing back. In many cases, the ads weren’t the only problem.

One account had a website that took 11 seconds to load on mobile. NO matter how much money they through into Google Ads, the website was dragging the conversion rate down. Another had a strong landing page and pricing 40% above the nearest competitor. Every visitor did the maths and bounced. A third had a lead form buried three clicks deep. Ads brought in the right people. The site did it’s best so that they never made contact.

None of these are Google Ads problems. They’re system problems where the ads were being asked to carry the team.

More ad budget wouldn’t have fixed any of them. More ad budget would have made them worse.

The conversation we have with every new prospect

I have this conversation with new prospects. I have it with existing clients too, when they want to double their spend and I know their site can’t handle the extra traffic.

The message is the same. If you want us to just take your money and run ads, we’re not the right agency. If you want honest advice about where your marketing is actually leaking and what to fix first, we’re the right conversation.

Sometimes prospects hear this and lean in. Sometimes they pick the agency that tells them what they want to hear and takes their money. After 15 years in business, we’ve learned that’s fine. The clients we win properly stay for years. The ones who wanted a magic wand were never going to be happy anyway.

Where to start

If you’re honest with yourself, you probably already know which part of your team isn’t pulling its weight. It’s the thing you keep meaning to fix and haven’t. The website redesign that keeps slipping. The AI SEO work you know you should be doing now that people are asking ChatGPT and Gemini instead of Googling. The follow-up process for enquiries that’s inconsistent.

Fix that first. Then increase your ad budget.

If you’d like a second pair of eyes on where your account is leaking, we offer a free audit done by an actual human at Digital Autopilot. No sales pitch, no obligation. Book a strategy session and we’ll walk through your account, your website, and where the biggest gains are hiding.

Because a team of champions is not a champion team. And the champion team is the one that wins the World Cup.
